DJing History

The first time I ever played a record was in Social! I first started djing by accident really when I was a student and working part time behind the bar. One Tuesday night the DJ didn't show, so rather than having no entertainment at all, a colleague, who knew how to DJ showed me the basics i.e. start,stop, the two speeds of a record and the cross fader. At the end of the night, the manager at the time asked me if I would like to play every Tuesday and because I had really enjoyed myself, I agreed. (I was instantly hooked!)

Every week, I'd borrow records from friends (mainly 80's cheese!) and use my wages to build up my own record collection. After six months or so, I was moved to Wednesday nights, which I loved doing then about a year and a half ago I was offered the Friday and Saturday night spots which I love doing even more.

It was a bit of an unconventional start to my DJing career as I was never actually taught by anyone how to do it, it was more of a gradual process of experimenting and picking up bits and pieces along the way.


Likes & Dislikes

Likes: My family, my friends, Music(obviously!) Mainly house and electronic, but I also love bands like The Smiths, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, The Pixies, The Rolling Stones etc, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Holidays, Relaxing, Hollyoaks (Guilty pleasure), horseriding and a good challenge.

Dislikes: Baked beans, eggs, The Eagles, being stressed, being bored, cricket, being hungover, people who make false promises, ice skating (picture a baby giraffe on ice!) and people who tan easily

Hobbies: My hobbies are mainly DJing, spending time with my horse Molly and finding new tunes to play in Social.

My Job: Other than DJing at Social, I work full time for a pensions and investments company (a bit of a contrast I know!)

Why I love Social: I love Social for lots of reasons:

If I had never worked there, I probably would never have discovered DJing which is now a major part of my life.

I have worked at Social in one capacity or another now for roughly six years, (which may well be a world record!) and is where I met some of the best friends that I have ever had, who are now mainly living in Edinburgh and London.

My stint working behind the bar gave me self confidence, taught me a lot about teamwork and other life skills that have come in extremely useful in all areas of life.

Most importantly though, the bar staff are all amazing and I have had many memorable nights out there over the years!
