"The hearty delicious food in the warm and inviting surroundings of The Bothy made it easy to forget the gale force winds and pouring rain which was battering the outside of The Byre. The Hairmyres eaterie has just brought in a brand new chef - the respected Michael Kilkie and he has created a special Kilkie's Kitchen menu to mark his arrival. Windswept and looking far from interesting, I arrived with three drookit guests.
We felt literally at home in the Bothy thanks to its soft lighting, plush seating, intimate size and rich decor. Settling down we cast our eyes over the menu. After much debate we made our decision. To start with we plumped for the seared scallops with chorizo sausage, butternut squash puree with crisp Serrano ham and garlic, red chilli and coriander marinated crispy chicken fillets with roast garlic and lime aioli.
The scallops were cooked to perfection, described as 'lovely and tender' by one of our entourage and the butternut squash complemented the scallops well.
The fact that the plate was clean within a matter of minutes suggested he wasn’t lying. It was a generous portion of fillets that were placed down in front of me with three large pieces of melt-in-the-mouth chicken. I was impressed.
For mains we ordered roast breast of Gressingham duck, slow braised beef, steak pie and an unusual mix – a smoked haddock, Stornoway black pudding and leek risotto.
The duck, which was served with sweet potato dauphinoise, chorizo sausage and a griottine cherry jus - posh gravy to you and I - was the perfect pink and our diner cleared her plate. The slow braised beef came with creamy mash - which was light and fluffy - and drizzled with a red wine and caramelised onion gravy. It was hearty and filling, just the right amount. The only criticism was that the carrots were just a tad al dente. The traditional steak pie appealed to our resident Desperate Dan, who, between mouthfuls, found the time to utter ‘this is a huge portion of a proper pie’, no complaints'. It wasn’t just the portion that was generous. Fifty pence from every steak pie sold is also donated to East Kilbride Youth Club, leaving our diner feeling charitable. The haddock and black pudding risotto arrived with a poached egg on top. The flavours worked really well, but the risotto itself felt a little undercooked. But overall it was another success. But not everything was perfect. A slight taint on the evening was how long we waited for dessert menus to be brought over, around 20 minutes, and then hearing that one of our choices - chocolate fudge cake - was sold out. Instead we plumped for a sticky toffee pudding and a white chocolate and amaretto cheesecake. The pudding, served hot with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, was super sweet and finished off the meal in style. The cheesecake was the highlight of the meal for one of our greedy guests, with the rich texture of the cake was balanced by the smooth raspberry coulis. Stuffed and satisfied we made our way to the front doors of the Bothy happy and contented. It really was just the weather that put a dampener on the whole experience." Kayleigh Mcleod 04/02/2011

"We had a lovely meal at The Byre and just had to share my experience. We booked in on one of their reduced menu and we were very pleased with the selection that we got to choose from. The bill was reasonable and the staff were very friendly and cant wait to go back." 12/10/2010
