"According to the adage, the best restaurants are found just off the beaten track. The Bothy - a mere stones throw away from the bustling metropolis of Byres Road in the West End of Glasgow - proves this point. The restaurant specialises in traditional Scottish cuisine, with an emphasis placed on seasonal dishes and the sourcing of local food. Because the team here are proud of their ingredients, the back of the menu details the origin of all the meat and a list of the Bothy's suppliers.
We started with a trio of haggis, neeps and tatties - a dish synonymous with Scottish restaurants. The Bothy's version reminds you why this is a national classic - the peppery haggis working perfectly with the sweet turnips and velvety whisky sauce. My partner's grilled black pudding and smoked bacon topped with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce shows the kitchen's ability to produce classics in a contemporary manner. Our main courses illustrated The Bothy's careful sourcing policy as well as plenty if creativity. My lion of Highland venison, served with a potatoe and rosemary gratin were accompanied by a sweet and intense bramble sauce - simply irresistable. My partent chose the seared grouse with roasted roots, which was deliciously matched with a honey-and-ginger-infused jus. The local sourcing of wild foods and execution of traditional classics, along with kilt wearing staff, make The Bothy stand out as a unique and contemporary restaurant with a traditional core." What a nice place. First time visit and will be back. Service was attentive but not in your face. Plenty of choice on the menu and good sized portions. The haggis starter went down well and I've never seen such a huge portions of mussels for a main. The sea bass main was also lovely with really well flavored fragrant rice. "I would like to thank you for a fabulous meal and evening which rounded off our son's graduation celebration. The restaurant ambiance, the waitress, the service and the food were all superb. We shall look back fondly on this very proud occasion and genuinely thank you for a wonderful evening. I did mean to ask if I could take a graduation menu home with me as I am compiling a keepsake book for my son. Would this be still be possible? Thank you again for everything and we will most definitely return. Kind regards, Paula Ruddy" 25/06/2011
